How to Paint Hair ( Digital Painting Tutorial )

If you're ready, let's start !

 Step 1 

Start with a thick waterbrush or the solid base color (in case you aren't painting but working  with a lineart) Form Me rough area the fur or hair is supposed  to be in.

 Step 2 

If you are painting use the same
color. if you are drawing on a
base color, use a slightly darker
color. Use the same waterbrush
as before but smaller. Draw a few
strains to give a 'hair-y' feeling.

 Step 3 

Next use a pencil brush. Chose a
color that's only a little darker and
start to define the actual shape and
texture of the hair/fur. In this case
I layered it some.

 Step 4 

With the same color as on the start
as well as a highlight color. use the
pencil and add some highlighted
areas.
Why not using too light or too dark
colors: It will look unnatural if the
contrast is too strong. High contrast
is used for material like metal. Very
low contrast is used for surfaces
like wood or plastic. Hair is smooth
and shiny. but it's somewhere in
between those two.

 Step 5 

Use a very thing pencil and add some loose hair
You can also strengthen
the highlights in this step some more.
If you are drawing with a lineart, make
sure you draw on a layer above the
lines to give it a fluffy feeling otherwise
it might look rather stiff.
