How to draw hair? l Digital Painting Tutorial

If you're ready, let's start !

STEP 1

 

 I draw the outlines with a 2B pencil, marking all the main

hair chunks.

STEP 2

 I take a 2B mechanical pencil (0.3mm)

and mark the darker areas in hair and start moving 'outwards' from them, following the growing direction of the hair.

STEP 3

 

 I continue with drawing the pencil lines really close together until I've covered everything.

I also add some darker shading with 9B.

STEP 4

 

 I take a blending stump and blend all the lines following the growing/combing

direction again.

STEP 5

 

 Now it's time to do some erasing! I use an eraser pen to draw some highlights.

Sometimes I sharpen the eraser to get a finer point, but normally I just try to erase other stuff in a way that the tip of the eraser stays sharp-ish.

STEP 6

 

 I blend it again so the highlights wouldn't look washed out from the drawing. I also add hair strands with a 0.3 mechanical pencil and darker shading with 9B.

STEP 7

 

 Then I repeat the pencil strokes-blending-erasing-blending routine while going gradually darker until it starts to look right :)

Finally I add some loose hair strands with 0.3 mechanical pencil for that realistic look.
